A legendary midfielder reveals a direct conversation with Roman Abramovich convinced him to make transformative switch to Chelsea.

Real Madrid are often considered the pinnacle for many football players, yet a direct conversation with Roman Abramovich proved persuasive enough for Claude Makelele to join Chelsea

The iconic Frenchman's Premier League legacy remains strong, with the defensive midfield position often colloquially known as the 'Makelele role'.

In 2003, Abramovich sanctioned an unprecedented transfer window, investing significantly to bring 11 new players to Stamford Bridge.

While various star players arrived, Makelele's acquisition was arguably the most significant of the group.

The former midfielder reflected that departing Los Blancos, widely considered the world's best team, is an unusual step.

However, the opportunity arose because Abramovich actively sought his transfer to Chelsea.

He recalled his surprise at the fast pace of English football but found it immensely enjoyable, relishing the energetic, end-to-end style of play.

"Yeah, I spoke to him (Abramovich) and he convinced me, (Claudio) Ranieri also,” Makelele told Mirror Football. “He pushed, and pushed, and pushed and I realised the club fought for me.

"Generally, you never move from Real Madrid because it is the best team in the world. The opportunity came to me because Roman fought for me to come to Chelsea.

"I started to learn about the Premier League and I was so surprised with the fast football. I enjoyed the football.

"It was amazing, fun, box-to-box, fighting. I think the sport was like this. I finished my career at PSG, but I enjoyed playing in the Premier League a lot."

The Frenchman made 217 appearances for the Premier League side spanning five seasons before departing after the 2007-08 campaign.

He scored twice for the Stamford Bridge outfit in the 2004-05 season and the 2006-07 campaign.

Makelele has held managerial roles at Bastia, Eupen and Asteras Tripolis, leaving the Greek side in September 2024.
