CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba has explained why Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have not been informed yet on when the CHAN 2024 tournament will take place.
CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba has revealed that the official dates for the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) set to be held in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania is yet to be confirmed until a special inspection of the region’s preparations for the tournament are held.
Mosenga-Omba was in Mombasa on Friday for the CECAFA general assembly, where various agendas, including venues for the numerous regional tournaments to be held later this year, were discussed.
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania’s ‘EAC Pamoja Bid’ won the hosting rights not just for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, but also for the 2024 CHAN and have started preparing their infrastructure, most specifically the stadiums, for the event.

Now, Mosenga-Omba has confirmed that, although the region will host the tournament this year, the specific official dates are yet to be announced as CAF will do an inspection of the stadia later this year.
“Not yet because we need first to make a special visit by CAF team to come and make the visit,” Mosengo said.
“They will visit all the facilities and projects before we come up with a date, but it will take place this year.”

FOOTBALL CHAN 2024: Will Kenya be ready this time?
Kenya will co-host the 2024 CHAN tournament alongside neighbours Uganda and Tanzania but past experience has some skeptical whether the country will be ready by September.
Among the requirements for hosting CHAN is having at least four stadia that meet CAF standards.
According to article 6 of CAF stadium regulations, stadiums earmarked to host CAF competitions are classified into four categories.
The facilities need to have a smooth and level playing surface that has either natural grass, hybrid or artificial turf with a proper drainage system to avoid flooding.

Kenya is planning a friendly match with Ecuador in the United States next month to give exposure to the team that will do duty for the country at the 2024 CHAN tournament.
The stadium is also supposed to have four well accessorised and easily accessible dressing rooms and all seats need to be individually fitted with numbering.
The national association must also present the government guarantees that include but not limited to entry visas and permits for the whole duration of the competition and a guarantee that any commitment which is formally entered into by the concerned National Association will also be considered as accepted by its government.
