Sports CS Ababu Namwamba briefed CAF on Kenya's readiness for hosting AFCON 2027 and CHAN 2024

Sports and Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has provided an extensive update to the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) on Kenya's readiness and ongoing preparations for two of Africa's premier football tournaments.

In a groundbreaking move, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), marking the first occasion in history that three nations will jointly deliver these continental events.

Namwamba met with CAF General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba in Mombasa, where the latter is attending the non-elective General Assembly of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) at the Pride Inn Paradise Hotel.

"I am delighted to have met Véron Mosengo-Omba, the General Secretary of CAF, who is in Mombasa to attend the General Assembly of CECAFA," Namwamba expressed.

The CS further highlighted the discussions held about the development of football not only in Kenya but also across the East African region.

Specifically, Namwamba detailed the strides being made towards the successful hosting of AFCON 2027.

"We are excited to be co-hosting with our brother and sister nations of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. We have assured CAF that we will certainly be ready by 2027, doing everything necessary, including refurbishing stadiums, preparing new venues, and ensuring the region is ready," he said.

Additionally, the readiness of the so-called Pamoja team to host CHAN in September 2024 was also a critical part of their discussions.

Namwamba's confidence in their preparedness was palpable as he noted, "We have no doubt that we will be ready to host CHAN this year."

The CHAN tournament, reserved for players active in their domestic leagues, has seen the Kenyan government approve plans in October 2023 to host the 16-team event, following Algeria's hosting of the last tournament in early last year.

To meet the international standards required for successfully co-hosting the 2027 AFCON, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are embarking on extensive improvements to their sports infrastructure.
