Bordeaux's Alberth Elis in induced coma due to severe head injury from match against Guingamp, overshadowing French Ligue 2.

Bordeaux striker Alberth Elis is currently in an induced coma at the hospital following a severe head injury incurred during a match against Guingamp, casting a shadow over the French Ligue 2.

The distressing incident, which occurred just 40 seconds into the game on Saturday, led to an eight-minute pause as medical teams attended to Elis and Donatien Gomis, the Guingamp defender involved in the unfortunate clash.

The club confirmed that Elis, aged 28, underwent surgery due to the injuries sustained.

However, Bordeaux has stated that it is "impossible" to predict the forward's prognosis at this time.

"We will follow the evolution of his state of health in the hospital in the coming days. At this moment, it is still impossible to comment on Alberth's vital and functional prognosis," the club announced.

As the Bordeaux community and fans worldwide hold their breath for good news, the club has called for discretion and respect regarding the dissemination of medical information about Elis.

"Out of respect for him, his family, and those close to him, at a time when nothing else is more important," the statement read, highlighting the emotional toll the incident has taken on everyone involved.

To support club employees through these challenging times, a psychological unit will be swiftly established.

Despite the collision, Gomis was able to complete the match, a testament to the unpredictable nature of sports injuries.

Recounting the incident, Gomis expressed his concern for Elis: "I think he [Elis] hits the ball first, I hit him. For a second, I was also in a daze. He lost consciousness. I hope he gets better."

Elis, with 64 caps and 13 goals for Honduras, has been an integral part of the Bordeaux team since his move from Boavista in 2021. In his tenure with Bordeaux, he has scored 15 goals in 60 appearances, showcasing his talent and becoming a fan favorite.

Prior to his time in Europe, Elis made a significant impact in Major League Soccer with the Houston Dynamo, where his performance caught the attention of European scouts.
