Qatar Stars League champions Al Duhail will be relieved to have Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga back to competitive action when they host Al Arabi on Sunday

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga will make his long-awaited league return as Al Duhail take on Al Arabi in the Qatar Stars League on Sunday.

Olunga recently returned to the team early this month after two months out after suffering a leg injury during his club’s Asian Champions League match with Persepolis in December.

It is an injury that proved costly for his team who have not won a match since that fateful day on December 5, suffering six defeats while drawing one of the seven games in all competitions.

Coach Christophe Galtier will, therefore, be relieved to have his main man back in the starting line-up as he seeks to get their campaign back on track even if looks like they will not be able to defend their title.

Al Duhail have already suffered five defeats in the 12 games they have played this season which has left them in sixth position on the table on 17 points, 14 behind leaders Al Sadd, and will be hoping for a good run that will lift them higher.

Galtier’s men have not shown an end to their poor run even in warm-up matches following the one-month break that the league took due to the Asian Cup.

Al Duhail lost 1-0 to Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua on February 1 before a 2-0 defeat to Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg four days later, but their coach was thankful that they were not competitive matches.

“We made a lot of mistakes, but it’s good that such mistakes occurred in a friendly and not a league match so we can correct them. It was also an opportunity for us to see our physical and technical progress under the constant training we are doing,” Galtier said after the matches.

Olunga was involved in both matches and he is now fit and ready to start leading the line again.

While Al Arabi are level on points with Al Duhail, it will not be a walk in the park for Olunga and co as they are the team who beat them last in a competitive fixture before the league took a break.

Al Arabi secured a 3-1 victory in the Qatari Stars Cup on December 28 and Galtier will be hoping that lightning does not strike twice.
