Bayer Leverkusen had to fight late on in the game to secure a draw against Premier League side Newcastle in Germany.

The Werkself head into the game needing to bounce back from the weekend defeat in the Bundesliga.

They also aim to avoid a defeat in the UEFA Champions League to maintain their position for a chance to qualify for the playoffs.

However, they could only manage a 2-2 draw against Newcastle in the sixth round of the Champions League, placing them 20th on the table.

As it happened

Eddie Howe named a strong side as Newcastle United made four changes for their Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen.

On the other hand, Bayer Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand misses the game due to "personal reasons". The club have confirmed that assistant Rogier Meijer will take charge as a result. Nathan Tella was also named on the bench for the game.

Leverkusen started the game brightly and got the first goal from a corner, which the captain, Robert Andrich, got up well and headed back across the goal. It hits the back of Bruno Guimaraes and beats Aaron Ramsdale.

The Magpies tried to get back into the game, but the home side were proving too stubborn to break down in the first half.

Entering the second half, Newcastle equalised from the penalty spot, with Anthony Gordon taking a deep breath and hammering the spot kick low past the goalkeeper.

Super Eagles star Nathan Tella was brought in as a substitute in the 71st minute to try to win the game for them.

However, it was Newcastle that took the lead, with Anthony Gordon pinning a stunning cross to Lewis Miley, who nodded it into the bottom corner.

The Magpies thought they had secured the win, but Leverkusen salvaged a point after Alejandro Grimaldo scored the equaliser.
