From silence to spark: Aubameyang finds his scoring touch again after being shut down by 20-year-old Super Eagles star
Former Chelsea and Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has rediscovered his scoring boots after a quiet performance against a 20-year-old Nigerian Super Eagles defender during the international break.
The 36-year-old, who was a key figure alongside Victor Osimhen ahead of the decisive World Cup playoff semifinal between Nigeria and Gabon, was largely shut down by Nigerian youngster Benjamin Fredrick as the Super Eagles thrashed Gabon 4-1 after extra time.

A disappointed close friend of Victor Osimhen reflects on Gabon’s 4–1 loss to Nigeria, revealing the squad promised themselves to fight despite the heartbreaking defeat.
However, after the international break, Aubameyang has quickly moved on from that challenging outing with a dominant display for Marseille in Ligue 1 to reach a landmark 400 career goals.
The former Arsenal captain played a starring role in Marseille's resounding 5-1 victory over OGC Nice, contributing three of the goals, with one goal and two assists, alongside Mason Greenwood’s two goals in a man of the match performance.
Despite the frustrating encounter with Nigeria’s defense at the international level, Aubameyang’s Ligue 1 form is indicative of his enduring quality as a prolific goal scorer and leader.
This impressive performance helped Marseille seal their position at the top of the Ligue 1 table with 28 points, sending a clear message to rivals that Aubameyang remains a force to be reckoned with in European football despite his age.
As the season progresses, Aubameyang’s resurgence will be key to Marseille’s ambitions both domestically and in Europe, while for the Super Eagles, the shadow of the equally talented Nigerian defender Benjamin Fredrick looms large as a rising defensive talent.
Aubameyang has now scored five goals and assisted four in just 11 matches this season for the ambitious Marseille side.
