Atalanta held at home by relegation-threatened Lecce as Serie A title dream fades into oblivion

Ademola Lookman and his Atalanta side can kiss any hopes of winning the Serie A title goodbye after dropping points against Lecce

Atalanta were unable to make home advantage count as they all but dropped out of the Serie A title race after a 1-1 draw against Lecce.

Lecce took the lead through a Jesper Karlsson penalty on the hour mark, and Atalanta had to rely on a spot-kick of their own, converted by Mateo Retegui, to salvage a point against the league minnows.

How it happened

Originally scheduled for Friday, the match was postponed to Saturday, with Lecce players donning white kits bearing a mourning ribbon and the words “No values, no colours” in protest at having to play so soon.

Despite missing key players through injury and suspension, Lecce started strong. Lassana Coulibaly tested Atalanta keeper Marco Carnesecchi early, while Jesper Karlsson eventually put Lecce ahead by converting a controversial penalty awarded after a handball by Isak Hien.

Atalanta struggled to respond, with Wladimiro Falcone denying Mario Pasalic and Ademola Lookman missing a key chance.

In the second half, Lecce should have doubled their lead when Santiago Pierotti fired wide from close range.

Atalanta finally found a breakthrough when Juan Cuadrado was brought down by Karlsson, allowing Mateo Retegui to equalise from the spot. Retegui almost completed the turnaround immediately afterward, but his header struck the post.

Despite a late surge, Atalanta couldn't find a winner, and Lecce held firm to earn a point in a vital and hard-fought match.
