De Joden’s poor start to the season continued as they found themselves three goals down at half-time, leading to protests from the Ajax faithful at the Johan Cruyff Arena that eventually forced the game to be abandoned.

Two goals from Santiago Gimenez and another from Igor Paixao set the tone for the game as Feyenoord threatened to blow away their hosts before the intervention of the Ajax fans.

How it happened

Ajax currently lay in a disgraceful 13th position in the Eredivisie after failing to win the league last season, leading to growing frustration amongst the club’s fan base, who were hoping for a De Klasseiker win to lift the mood at the club.

Feyenoord were unwilling to give any succor from their recent troubles during the much anticipated derby and raced into an early lead when Gimenez profited from a Quinten Timber assist after only nine minutes.

Gimenez doubled the lead for Feyenoord 10 minutes after the opener, before turning provider for Paixao to make it 3-0 and put a gulf reigning Eredivisie champions and their hosts.

The third goal for Feyenoord sparked protests in the stands as fans started to throw flares onto the pitch before the half time break forcing the game to initially be suspended by referee Serdar Gozubuyuk.

Despite attempts to calm the situation, the fans did not let down during the break and at the start of the second half.

The continued harassment of the players and pitch forced the centre referee to call for the suspension of proceedings to avoid serious injury and a possible riot during the derby.

The match will likely now be completed at a later date behind closed doors with an anticipated suspension for fans at the Johan Cruyff arena.

With Ajax also likely to lose the completed fixture given the score at the time of abandonment, their record in the league this season will stand at one win, two draws, and two losses from their opening five games, a complete disaster for a team expected to challenge for major honours at the end of the season.
