Mohamed Salah has left Liverpool to join Egypt’s squad ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations campaign, but Klopp is not too happy.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has refused to wish his star man Mohamed Salah good luck ahead of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Salah's AFCON woe for Klopp and Liverpool

Salah left the Liverpool squad after the match against Newcastle on Monday night to link up with his national teammates ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off on January 13, 2024, with the Pharaohs of Egypt looking to win their eighth continental title.

The former Basel star could miss up to a month for Liverpool, depending on how far Egypt goes in the tournament.

Salah’s absence is a big blow for Klopp’s men as the Egyptian has been the Reds’ best player in their quest to dethrone Manchester City as Premier League champions.

Klopp hopes Egypt crash out of AFCON group stage

Liverpool currently lead the table with 45 points, three ahead of Aston Villa in second place. Salah has played a prominent role in the Reds’ quest, scoring 14 goals and setting up another eight in 20 league games.

As a result, Klopp is hoping to have his talisman back as soon as possible. Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup third-round clash against Arsenal on Sunday, Klopp said he would be lying if he said he wished Salah and Wataru Endo ahead of their national team commitments.

“I said if I wish you good luck it would be a lie, Klopp on what he told Salah and Endo. “I would be happy if they go out at the Group stage”, he added.

Egypt are in Group B alongside Cape Verde, Ghana and Mozambique, kicking off their campaign on Sunday, January 13, against The Mambas.

Salah will be key to Egypt’s chances, with the former Chelsea star looking to win his first title with the national team after reaching the final two years ago.
