An old statement by Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has resurfaced where he said he's not going to play in another AFCON

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has revealed that the 2023 African Cup of Nations taking place in Ivory Coast would be his last participation at the continental tournament.

The 31-year-old attacker made this statement during an interview with the BBC back in 2022.

Aside from football, Ahmed Musa, who is well-known for his philanthropic work, said the time was right to give room for younger players to fly Nigeria's green and white flag.

"There's the need to give a chance to other young players to come through and play in the tournament."

"I got my chance as a young player. I've fulfilled some childhood memories. Everything that has a beginning must come to an end,’ he told BBC Sports Africa.

Ahmed Musa wants to win 2023 AFCON

The Super Eagles captain won his first-ever AFCON with the Super Eagles when late Stephen Keshi led Nigeria to win the trophy in Burkina Faso.

Ahmed Musa wants his last participation at the continental tournament to end in similar fashion as the first.

"What is important is to try to give my best and try to win it for my country. The players are fully aware of my plans, and we have a squad good enough to win it again.

"I would like for the story of my Nations Cup to end very well like the first by winning it."

The Sivasspor forward is Nigeria’s most capped player, having made over a hundred appearances for the Super Eagles. He won his 109th cap when he was introduced as a 93rd-minute substitute when Nigeria played Guinea Bissau in March 2023.

It would be a dream come true if Ahmed Musa can lead the Super Eagles to glory at the tournament at Ivory Coast, and of cos we would be rooting for the team.
