Mohamed Salah's missed penalty against Bournemouth set an unwanted milestone for the Egyptian

Only a week after becoming Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League, Mohamed Salah's missed penalty in the Reds’ 1-0 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday set a negative personal record for the Egyptian.

Salah misses crucial penalty kick against Bournemouth

Salah was given the chance to draw Liverpool level from the penalty spot after a handball from Bournemouth’s Adam Smith handed the Reds their first spot kick in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool, trailing 1-0 at that point, needed their talisman to come up with the goods as they struggled to create chances against Bournemouth’s low-block, but on this very rare occasion, Salah let them down.

Despite being handed Liverpool’s best chance of the game, Salah failed to find the target, blazing his penalty kick miserably wide as Liverpool went on to lose the game.

Salah’s missed penalty marks personal low point

As a result, Salah reached an unprecedented low in the Premier League because this was his first penalty attempt in the competition to completely miss the target.

Prior to the miss against Bournemouth, Salah had attempted 20 penalties in the Premier League, scoring 18 and seeing two saved by the opposition goalkeeper, making his poorly struck penalty under pressure the worst kick he has attempted from the spot so far.

Salah’s missed penalty had far-reaching consequences as Liverpool succumbed to a 1-0 loss away to Bournemouth, putting a huge spanner in the works of their quest for UEFA Champions League football next season.

The Egyptian will however be backed to come back stronger from this as he remains Liverpool’s number one penalty taker, as well as their top goal scorer and top assist provider this season with 11 goals and seven assists in 26 appearances so far.
