European Super League gaining support

Bernd Reichart, chief executive of A22 Sports, the company behind the European Super League has tried to move on from the failed attempt to launch the league in 2021 by revamping the plan.

The rebranded league would have no permanent members and include between 60 and 80 clubs, with each playing a minimum of 14 games per season.

The idea is spearheaded by Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus. The A22 believes UEFA wields an unfair monopoly over European football and that the existing model is broken.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag gave his thoughts on the idea last week and he confirmed he would not be opposed to the ESL.

Kroos on European Super League

Now, Kroos has gone on record to say that breaking away from UEFA-led competition may not be such a bad thing after all.

“I think we will see the Super League. And I believe so for several reasons," Kroos said on the Einfach mal Luppen podcast.

"If you look carefully from both angles, you will see that UEFA is by no means a great Samaritan for football fans and that the Super League has no plans, at least in the second attempt, to exclude any team, because there will be no permanent founding members.”

It will be intriguing to see how many more players agree with Kroos on the issue. The idea of the European Super League has constantly been a source of debate among fans.

In 2021 when the idea to form the breakaway league was first revealed, significant protests from fans caused a number of the clubs involved to withdraw their participation.

The idea hasn’t been met with such vitriol this time around and it will be interesting to see how far it progresses.
