Piers Morgan believes that Ronaldo's move to Al Nassr gives him an edge over Messi

Pro-Ronaldo journalist Piers Morgan has taken a swipe at Messi in an unusual interview rant where he credited his interview with Cristiano Ronaldo for helping the Portuguese superstar make the most lucrative deal in football history.

Piers Morgan credits his interview as the reason for Ronaldo’s move

Morgan's interview with Ronaldo effectively ended his European career after the 37-year-old legend of the game was released from his Manchester United contract and became a pariah to other top European clubs, but Morgan believes it all worked out perfectly for Ronaldo.

In an interview with Tetlar magazine, Morgan said, "Thanks to the fallout from our interview, Ronaldo signed the biggest transfer deal in football history, and is now the world's highest-paid athlete, at the age of 37.“

Ronaldo moved to Al Nassr on a reported €200 million per-year contract

While rumours of Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr circulated, Morgan insisted that the move would never materalise because Ronaldo would not be motivated to move for money, and he remained firm in his original convictions.

He claims that other aspects of the deal were what attracted Ronaldo to Al-Nassr, including a chance to one-up his eternal rival Lionel Messi.

Still speaking to Teltar, Morgan said “He's also doing what he's done throughout his career, and which for me gives him the edge over Messi, and that's challenge himself in a new country, and new league, at a time when football in the Middle East is really taking off, as we saw at the Qatar World Cup where Morocco reached the semi-finals and Saudi Arabia beat the eventual winners, Messi's Argentina."

Ronaldo loving life in Al Nassr

As to whether the move has turned out well for Ronaldo, Morgan said that Ronaldo could not be happier and was having a great time both on and off the pitch, despite Al Nassr being knocked out of the Saudi Super Cup.

Morgan also confirmed his closeness with Ronaldo, saying “He's definitely happy. I've swapped a few texts with him, and he's absolutely loving it, on and off the pitch."

Ronaldo is loving life at Al Nassr

According to Piers Morgan, just being away from Manchester United was enough to find his joy again, while the opportunity to close out his career on a high was too good to turn down for Ronaldo

“He wanted freedom from Manchester United, where he rightly felt he had been badly disrespected by both the manager and senior club executives. Ideally, I think he'd have preferred to play for another top club in the Champions League for a year or two, but Al Nassr made him a staggering offer, and I think the fresh challenge of raising the profile of football in a new region of the world, at the twilight of his incredible career, really appealed to him.” Morgan said.

Piers Morgan has never passed up the opportunity to praise Ronaldo, and this interview was the latest in a long line of soft-soaping by the British journalist.
