Nigerian boxers dominated as over 40 boxers from eight African countries compete in various weight categories.

The maiden World Boxing Council-Africa Boxing Union (WBC-ABU) amateur tournament concluded in Lagos over the weekend, with Nigerian boxers emerging victorious in 10 out of 11 bouts on the final day.

The tournament, organised by Yucateco Boxing Promotions, saw 42 boxers from eight African countries compete in various weight categories.

The event served as a qualifier for the World Championship, scheduled to take place in Mexico later this year.

Precious, Akinola win female and male categories

Nigerian boxers Precious Anine and David Akintola took home the WBC belts in the female 60kg and male 75kg categories, respectively.

What African boxing President said

Meanwhile, President of the African Boxing Union, Houcine Houichi, praised the organisers and emphasised the need for more competitions to provide exposure for amateur boxers.

He said, "What Yucateco has done should be commended by boxing nations around the world. The WBC and the ABU will continue to collaborate with Yucateco in advancing the course of amateur boxing in Africa."

Houichi also commended the tournament organiser, Imadu, for his passion and commitment to the growth of the sport.

"I am confident that other boxing outfits in Africa have been encouraged by what Yucateco has done. My friend Imadu has set the pace, and it's time for others to show their willingness for further collaborations."

The tournament also included a WBC-ABU Referees and Judges course, which upgraded and updated the knowledge of ring officials. Certificates were awarded during the closing ceremony.

The success of the maiden tournament has encouraged Yucateco Boxing Promotions to organise another sanctioned competition before the World Championship, providing more boxers with the opportunity to represent Africa in Mexico.
