A statement from his agent, Rich Paul, fuelled the speculation. "LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future; he understands that, but he wants a realistic shot at a title.

"We consider the Lakers an important part of his career," Paul stated, before adding: "We understand it's difficult to reconcile contending for a championship with building for the future.

"We want to see what's best for LeBron at this stage of his life and career. He wants every remaining season to be meaningful, and the Lakers understand that, support him, and want the best for him."

According to US reports, via Sportal, executives from other teams believe a trade request from James is a real possibility, a concern shared by the Lakers.

However, James has a no-trade clause in his contract, giving him the power to veto any potential move, effectively controlling the situation. It remains to be seen how this will unfold.
