UPDATE: Chinese Embassy approves Team Nigeria athletes' visas, race against time to compete at the World Relays

Team Nigeria are currently racing against time to be at the World Relays after being denied visas by the Chinese Embassy but have now been cleared.

Fresh updates emerging from the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC) affirm that the Chinese Embassy has approved Team Nigeria athletes' visas. However, they race against time to arrive early before the start of the World Athletics Relays in China.

Pulse Sports Nigeria earlier reported that the Nigerian contingents listed to don the country's colours at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, from May 10-11 were denied visas, hence their chances of qualifying for the World Championships in Tokyo this summer was on a tight rope.

Thankfully, news reaching Pulse Sports Nigeria from the NSC confirms, they've all been granted visas, but now race against time to arrive in China before the start of the championship.

"The Chinese Embassy just approved the visas and all passports are with the AFN performance director. Race is now on to see if we can get all of them to take off from LA. Fingers crossed."

According to reports, seven US-based Nigerian athletes were denied by Chinese authorities, while home-based teammates were granted theirs — even though both applications were submitted weeks ago.

This is due to the Chinese government's hard policies against the USA. AFN petitioned World Athletics, calling for a qualification exemption, citing administrative failure by both the hosts and World Athletics to ensure fair access.

With the visas now granted, it becomes a race against time to book flights and arrive on time before the start of the World Relays on Saturday evening.

Nigeria wasn't the only country affected by the visa denial issue as six other countries including Dominica Republic are also in the sad situation.
