AFCON 2025: Osimhen to captain Super Eagles against Morocco
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen will be the captain of the Nigerian national team for their high-stakes Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 semi-final clash against host nation Morocco.
The decision comes as Nigeria’s regular captain, Wilfred Ndidi, is unavailable for the encounter after picking up a suspension during the quarter-final victory over Algeria.
In Ndidi’s absence, head coach Eric Chelle has entrusted vice captain, Osimhen, with the leadership role as the Super Eagles aim to secure a place in the final.
Osimhen, who has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the tournament, has already demonstrated his influence on and off the pitch. He captained the Super Eagles during their 3-1 win against Uganda.
The Galatasaray forward played a decisive role in the quarter-final, scoring once and providing an assist in the convincing 2-0 win over Algeria.
Nigeria head into the semi-final unbeaten, having won all five of their matches so far, while Morocco will rely on home advantage and a strong defensive record to challenge the three-time African champions.
With the captain’s armband now on his arm, Osimhen will be tasked not only with leading the attack but also inspiring the Super Eagles as they chase a fourth AFCON title and their first since 2013.
The much-anticipated semi-final showdown will take place on Wednesday night at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 GMT.
