AFCON 2025: Alex Iwobi shines, named Toni Kroos in Super Eagles’ victory over Tanzania

Alex Iwobi produced a standout midfield performance as Nigeria’s Super Eagles opened their AFCON 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tanzania, at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco.

The Fulham midfielder was the driving force behind both Nigerian goals, supplying two exquisite assists.

His performance quickly became one of the major talking points of the match earned comparisons with German midfield legend Toni Kroos.

Popular Nigerian comedienne and content creator Taaooma (Maryam Apaokagi) captured the mood on social media with a viral post on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Iwobi giving Toni Kroos tonight! 👏”

Nigeria took the lead in the first half after Iwobi delivered a perfectly weighted ball that defender Semi Ajayi converted with a powerful header.

Tanzania responded after the break with an equaliser.

However, Iwobi once again proved decisive. The 29-year-old split the Tanzanian defence with a sublime through-ball, setting up Ademola Lookman to finish clinically and restore Nigeria’s lead.
