When a player doesn't want it — Frustrated Guardiola swipes at Man City’s injured stars
Pep Guardiola took a sharp, subtle dig at Manchester City's injury-hit squad, quoting his idol Johan Cruyff to express frustration over the recent injury crisis at the Etihad.
The City boss, dealing with absences like Ruben Dias, John Stones, Josko Gvardiol, and others in defence, referenced Cruyff's old wisdom during a recent interview.
Following City’s 2-0 victory over Wolves, the Catalan boss invoked the philosophy of his mentor, Johan Cruyff, to imply that avoiding the treatment table is as much about mindset as it is about treatment.
Facing a squad decimated by eleven senior absences, Guardiola was asked about the long-term recovery of key players, including John Stones. His response was a blunt challenge to his squad's resilience.
Guardiola opens up on Man City injury problems
“When a player doesn’t want to be injured, they will not be injured,” Guardiola remarked.
“There are situations where you are unlucky, but when you are in incredible shape, and you truly don’t want to be injured, you will not be. Unfortunately, we have a lot of injuries right now, and that is the problem.”
Guardiola’s frustration appeared to peak when discussing Oscar Bobb, who is close to joining Fulham.

When asked why the winger was unavailable, Pep’s response was icy: “The player says he is not fit, so he’s not fit.”
The timing of this tough-love approach is interesting: City are set for a critical Champions League fixture against Galatasaray on Wednesday, and they are down to the bare bones.
Rodri is suspended, while Savinho, Nico Gonzalez, and Stones are already ruled out. New signings Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi are ineligible until the knockout stages.
