‘We're missing a very important player’ - Club Brugge manager expresses frustration at losing Onyedika to AFCON
The 24-year-old has been a mainstay for the club this season, making 24 appearances across all competitions.
His contributions include two goals and an assist, but more importantly, he provides essential balance to Leko's tactical setup.
However, he was called up by the Nigerian national team for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Ivan Leko speaks on Onyedika’s absence
During his pre-match press conference, Leko acknowledged the challenge of replacing the Nigerian international, especially with fellow midfielder Ludovit Reis still sidelined by injury.
"We're missing a very important player. And because Ludovit Reis is still out, we don't have a similar profile to replace him," Leko stated. "So we'll have to come up with something, but we have enough quality to find a solution."
Despite the setback, the Croatian coach remains confident in his squad's depth and ability to adapt as they look to continue their strong league form.
"You can be sure that the eleven players will know how to defend and attack together on Sunday," Leko affirmed.
Onyedika was part of the Super Eagles contingent that arrived in Morocco on Thursday to finalise their preparations for the continental tournament.
Nigeria, three-time African champions, are aiming to reclaim the title after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Under head coach Eric Chelle, Nigeria will kick off their Group C campaign against Tanzania on December 23.
They will then face Tunisia on December 27 before concluding the group stage against Uganda on December 30.
