‘We realised our mistake’ — AFCON 2025 final hero admits Senegal were wrong to walk out against Morocco
Senegal match-winner Pape Gueye has admitted his side made the wrong call by briefly leaving the pitch during the chaotic AFCON 2025 final against Morocco in Rabat.
The midfielder reflected on the controversial moment that threatened to overshadow Senegal’s dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory.
Gueye admits walk-off was a mistake after late penalty drama
The AFCON 2025 final was marked by high tension after Morocco were awarded a late penalty in normal time, moments after Senegal had a goal ruled out. The decision sparked anger among Senegal players, who walked off the pitch in protest, delaying the match for around 20 minutes.
Speaking on French television, Gueye conceded the reaction was wrong. “We are only human. We realised our mistake and came back out,” he said, stressing that emotions ran high on the biggest stage.
Senegal eventually returned to the field to allow the match to continue, avoiding what could have become a far more serious incident.
After play resumed, Morocco forward Brahim Diaz attempted a risky Panenka penalty, which was saved. Gueye admitted he was surprised by the choice, saying:
“It was daring and I would not have risked that myself.” Moments later, the 26-year-old struck the decisive goal in extra time to seal Senegal’s second AFCON title in four years.
Mane’s leadership praised as Morocco report incident to CAF, FIFA
Gueye reserved special praise for captain Sadio Mane, who remained on the pitch during the chaos and urged his teammates to return.
“He found the right words at the right moment,” Gueye said. “It shows how important he is to us. We owe him a big thank you.”
Mane’s leadership was widely credited as a key factor in preventing Senegal from abandoning the match entirely.
Following the final, the Moroccan Football Federation officially referred the walk-off and crowd behaviour to both CAF and FIFA, ensuring the incident will be reviewed despite Senegal’s historic triumph.
