Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri has stated that winning the Ballon d'Or was a "breath of fresh air" during a challenging year, but it couldn't fully compensate for the extensive time he missed due to injury.
The 29-year-old Spaniard was sidelined for most of last season with a severe knee injury. While he received football's most coveted individual award a month after his injury, it didn't entirely alleviate his disappointment.
What Rodri said
"The injury was far more significant than the Ballon d'Or. The award was a breath of fresh air at a time when I was going through a really tough period," Rodri told a press conference ahead of Spain's World Cup qualifier against Turkey.
"I'm happy for the recognition, but it doesn't benefit me now. I still want to be the same player. Above all, going through such a mental process, I'm striving to return to my best level. I want to enjoy football again. That's my only goal. So far, I've played two matches this season with my club. I'm getting back into shape," the midfielder commented, as quoted by BTA.
Rodri, who came off the bench in Spain's 3-0 victory over Bulgaria on Thursday, acknowledges the national team competition from Arsenal's new signing, Martin Zubimendi.
However, he not only welcomes this but also added that the 26-year-old represents the future of the squad.
"He's a great player. He has the discipline and mentality that can make him one of the best, if he isn't already. I spoke with him the other day and told him that now is his time, that I'm handing him the keys to the team. He's at an incredible level, and I'm happy to see the team in the same situation. I'm very happy to be back. I'm recharged and very excited; physically, I feel very good. Now it's a matter of getting my rhythm back," Rodri added.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente, who extended his best wishes to his predecessor Luis Enrique after the Paris Saint-Germain manager underwent surgery for a fractured collarbone, stated that Rodri is ready to start against Turkey tonight.
"We'll see how training goes, but he's in perfect condition. He might start the match or not, but the most important news is that he's here to bring us a lot of joy."
