Despite the recent 3-0 loss to Manchester City, Sunderland have been the best promoted team so far this season. The Black Cats are definitely not a walk in the park for any team, including the traditional top 6 teams.

With the Tyne-Wear derby at stake, Regis Le Bris will task his men to show the home crowd that the team has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

Meanwhile, Newcastle held Bayer Leverkusen to a 2-2 draw to make sure they have not lost a game in their last 5 matches, including league football.

The visitors also understand the importance of this rivalry match and will want to take all points away from home. Recent results show that the Magpies are still on track in ensuring they remain in the European qualification position.

Sunderland vs Newcastle head-to-head

These two rivals have not played each other in the EPL since 2015, making this encounter a highly anticipated one by both teams. However, Sunderland had enjoyed a better H2H in the last 10 meetings in all competitions (W6, D3, L1).

The two sides met last in the FA Cup in 2024 where the Magpies recorded a 3-0 victory. Prior to this match, the last time Sunderland lost to Newcastle was in 2011.

Luke O'Nien will not be available for this derby as he will be serving his first of the three-match suspension given to him as a result of the red card he picked up in the match against Man City. Other players not available for the Black Cats are Habib Diarra and Aji Alese.

On a good note, Le Bris will be happy to have  Reinildo Mandava back to the team. Both Dennis Cirkin and Leo Hjelde are also due to rejoin the team after passing the last fitness test.

On the Newcastle side, Eddie Howe will miss key players, including Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Will Osula, Emil Krafth, and Kieran Trippier. This leaves the English manager with the choice of starting 19-year-old Lewis Miley.
