But behind the medals and global recognition lies a story of resilience, sacrifice, and the unwavering support of one person who believed in her dreams when others didn’t, her mother.
What Nnadozie said
Nnadozie grew up in Owerri, Imo State, in a family where football was both a passion and a warning. Her father, a former player himself, discouraged her from pursuing the sport after his own career had ended in disappointment.

“My dad never wanted me to play, he played football himself and didn’t make it, so he didn’t believe in it for me. He would even chase me off the street when I played with boys,” Nnadozie revealed.
Yet, while her father sought to protect her from heartbreak, her mother quietly worked to keep her daughter’s dream alive.
She added, “My mum was the one who changed everything for me. She’d lie to my dad and say I was at her sister’s, or secretly give me money for transport to get to training. She even bought me my first Barcelona shirt. She’s the reason I kept going.”
Her breakthrough came at the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, a year later, at just 19, she made her senior World Cup debut in France, keeping a clean sheet against Korea Republic and becoming the youngest-ever goalkeeper to record one at the tournament.
