‘We didn't deserve that’ - PSG coach Luis Enrique keeps it real! Spanish tactician admits Parisians rode fortune in lucky Super Cup victory
Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique delivered an honest admission following their dramatic UEFA Super Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.
The Spanish tactician acknowledged that the French giants were fortunate to snatch the silverware in a thrilling encounter that left Spurs heartbroken.
Tottenham appeared poised to secure their second European trophy of 2025 after building a commanding 2-0 lead early in the match.
Micky van de Ven opened the scoring for Spurs early in the second half after a rebound from Lucas Chevalier’s save, and Cristian Romero doubled the advantage soon after with a header from Pedro Porro’s free kick.
Despite dominating possession, PSG struggled to create clear chances for much of the game, with Tottenham’s defense holding strong.
However, the French side mounted a fierce late comeback, sparked by super-sub Kang-in Lee’s long-range strike in the 85th minute and capped off by Gonçalo Ramos’s equalising header deep into stoppage time, forcing the match into penalties.
In the shootout, Tottenham initially led by two after Vitinha missed for PSG, but the tide turned as PSG’s Donnarumma replacement Lucas Chevalier became the hero.
Chevalier saved key penalties, including one from Van de Ven, and after Mathys Tel missed for PSG, Nuno Mendes confidently converted the decisive spot kick to secure a 4-3 shootout win for PSG.
Honest Enrique speaks out
Speaking in an interview on UEFA.com, Luis Enrique admitted, “For 80 minutes we didn’t deserve that (win). I think Tottenham deserved the win because we could feel that they were in form, they have been training for six weeks. They played a great match.”
He continued, “We have been training for six days, but sometimes football is unfair. I have to say that we were lucky in the last ten minutes. We could have scored two goals, and I have to say that my players had faith until the last minute. But football is unpredictable. In that sense, I have to say that we were very lucky.”

With this victory, PSG become the first French club to win the UEFA Super Cup, adding yet another trophy to their successful 2025 campaign under Luis Enrique’s guidance.
Meanwhile, Tottenham, despite their strong start and spirited performance, were left to rue their missed opportunity to add to their growing trophy cabinet.
The final was as Enrique said a reminder of the unpredictability of football and the resilience of PSG, who turned a seemingly lost game into a memorable triumph that stunned many.
