Mosimane has been without a job since leaving Iranian side Esteghlal FC in January 2025 but has been linked to the Orlando Pirates role before as well as Kaizer Chiefs, Bafana Bafana and last month, there were reports that he was close to rejoining Mamelodi Sundowns.

While he has not shut down the possibility of managing a club in South Africa, Mosimane has made it clear that the job he wants the most right now in the South African national team Bafana Bafana.

“I am interested,” Mosimane declared about his interest in the Bafana Bafana job during an interview with SMWX.

Why Mosimane Wants Bafana Job

“The medal that I want to close everything, the medal I don’t have in the continent, so I would love to do that with Bafana and win the AFCON.”

Mosimane feels this is the best time to manage South Africa as the country is rich with football talent that can easily win the Africa Cup of Nations for the second time since their only victory in 1996.

“That is the one I want but I am not campaigning. The football association will put whoever they think is right but if you ask me today, would you sign the contract? I would sign it today because it means a lot to me and because we are at the right time, the right generation,” he added.

“Football goes in circles, Brazil haven’t won the World Cup for so long, France won it and haven’t won it, Spain won it, Germany were always winning it before but not now and at this time, South Africa we have the product to win the AFCON.

“We came third in the edition before [AFCON 2023] but I think [Mamelodi] Sundowns, [Orlando] Pirates, [Kaizer] Chiefs also is coming through, and they have the capacity to give us the players to fight.

“I like it when Chiefs is playing Confederation Cup, Pirates and Sundowns in Champions League and that is where you test yourself so we have an opportunity now,” said the former Al Ahly coach.

Mosimane will have to wait until June to know if he will be the man leading South Africa as current coach Hugo Broos will leave his post after the 2026 World Cup.

It would not be the first time for Mosimane managing Bafana Bafana as he was in charge of the team between 2010 and 2012.
