Not a coach or a pundit - Virgil van Dijk on post-football career
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he has no immediate plans to move into coaching or football punditry once his playing career comes to an end.
What Virgil van Dijk said
The Dutch defender, who will turn 35 in July, opened up about his future during an interview with Sky Sports, admitting that while he would not completely rule anything out, neither role currently appeals to him.
“I’d never say never, because I feel like I have that platform of saying or doing the right thing, but I don’t see myself being a pundit,” Van Dijk said.
The Reds skipper also expressed reservations about stepping into management, pointing to the intense pressure that comes with the role.
“I don’t think I see myself being a coach. I feel like you’re stepping from one world in terms of being under pressure constantly – not that I don’t like it because it’s part of what I wanted to be, to then quitting for a little bit and then go back in it, and then also have no control really of what’s going to happen on the pitch,” he explained.
Rather than staying in the spotlight, Van Dijk says his passion lies in nurturing young talent and giving back to the game at the grassroots level. The Liverpool captain revealed he spends considerable time around the club’s academy, helping inspire future stars.
“I really like inspiring the next generation. I’m at the academy quite a lot because I feel like those are the guys that are eventually going to keep Liverpool up there,” he said.
Van Dijk also highlighted his personal involvement in youth development through his own tournament initiative.
“I have my own youth tournament, and I want to make sure it’s the biggest U13S tournament in the world. I know what it brings to those youngsters, and I really like that. But let’s see, there’s plenty of time,” he added.
Widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s greatest defenders, Van Dijk remains focused on his playing career for now, while keeping his post-football future open.
