‘I would have played for Cameroon’ — Mbappe declares love for African heritage
Kylian Mbappé has opened up about his deep-rooted connection to Africa, revealing that his international future could have taken a very different path.
The French superstar spoke candidly about his ties to Cameroon and Algeria, offering a heartfelt, and humorous, glimpse into his cultural identity.
Mbappe reflects on strong Cameroonian roots
Speaking on The Bridge, Mbappé admitted that his upbringing was more heavily influenced by his Cameroonian heritage. “I grew up more with Cameroonian culture than Algerian culture, because I was closer to my Cameroonian family,” he explained.
The France national team forward also shared his desire to strengthen his connection with his Algerian roots. “Over the years, though, I've become much closer to my Algerian relatives. I've never been to Algeria yet, but it's something I'm really looking forward to doing,” he added.
Despite never visiting Algeria, Mbappé made it clear that both sides of his heritage remain important to him, shaping his identity beyond football.
‘I would have played for Cameroon’ – Mbappe reveals
In a light-hearted moment, Mbappé revealed which nation he would have represented if France had not been an option. “I think I would have played for Cameroon if not for France,” he said.
He added with a laugh: “I would have messed with Ethan in Algeria,” referring jokingly to splitting allegiances within the family.
The comments just go to show Mbappé’s strong emotional bond with Africa, particularly Cameroon, where he has frequently visited and maintained close family ties.
While his legacy continues to grow with France, his words serve as a reminder of the cultural influences that helped shape one of football’s biggest stars.
