“I heard them SCREAMING my name” - 16 y/o Rio Ngumoha’s emotional reaction after breaking Liverpool record
Liverpool produced one of their most dramatic moments of the season when 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha delivered a stoppage-time winner against Newcastle United at St James' Park.
Introduced just minutes into injury time, Ngumoha struck decisively in the 100th minute, securing a 3-2 triumph and setting a new club milestone as Liverpool's youngest-ever goalscorer – at precisely 16 years and 361 days.
What Happened?
Liverpool once led 2-0 via goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike, capitalising on Anthony Gordon’s red card, only for Newcastle to equalise late through Bruno Guimarães and Will Osula.
But it was Ngumoha’s sudden strike that finally delivered the result, cementing Liverpool’s perfect start to the season.

Speaking after the game, an excited Ngumoha said: “I was happy to score, I'm buzzing," Ngumoha told TalkSPORT as per ESPN.
"I heard them screaming my name and that's a very sensational moment."
Ngumoha’s achievement didn’t stop at club level — his name now sits among elite company as the fourth-youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, a list that includes luminaries like James Vaughan, James Milner, and Wayne Rooney.
Per TalkSPORT, Ngumoha also became only the second 16-year-old ever to score a winning goal in the competition, one day older than Rooney at the time of his historic debut strike.
Rio Ngumoha: Who is Liverpool’s 16-year-old hero?
Ngumoha joined Liverpool from Chelsea’s academy just last year.
He had already demonstrated his talent by becoming the youngest player to start a first-team game for Liverpool - in the FA Cup at 16 years and 135 days, before making his Premier League debut.
Despite the gravity of the moment, Ngumoha stayed grounded.
"But you just can't get too carried away with all the noise, because at the end of the day I probably finish 100 times on the training ground.”
His composure defined the submission of one of the most talked-about goals of the season.
Ngumoha’s breakout moment signals more than just a personal milestone, it underscores Liverpool’s ongoing faith in youth development.
The club reportedly even adjusted their wage structure to secure his transfer from Chelsea, recognising his rare potential.
For manager Arne Slot and teammates like Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai, there is a palpable excitement about Ngumoha’s emergence.
