Giroud marks Ligue 1 return with record-breaking goal in Brest-Lille thriller
Brest and Lille played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Stade Francis-Le Blé in their Ligue 1 season opener.
The scoring was opened in the 11th minute by none other than Olivier Giroud, making his return to French top-flight football for the first time since the 2011/12 season.
The veteran striker became Lille's oldest goalscorer in league history at 38 years and 121 days, surpassing the previous record held by José Fonte by just two days.
Les Dogues doubled their lead in the 26th minute through Hakon Arnar Haraldsson.
However, Brest fought back with two goals from Kamory Doumbia in the 34th and 51st minutes.
Lille regained the advantage in the 66th minute thanks to Ngal Ajel Mukau, but Julien Le Cardinal's 75th-minute strike ensured the points were shared.
In the next round of Ligue 1 fixtures, Brest travel to Toulouse, while Lille host Monaco.
