As Pulse Sports reported, the Germany international signed a long-term contract with Liverpool following a £100 million (€117.5 million) agreement (with £16 million (€18.8 million) in bonuses) with Bayer Leverkusen for his transfer.

Wirtz believes it is the right moment in his career for a significant step, and he sought a club among the global elite. He picked Liverpool despite keen interest from Bayern Munich and had earlier enquired from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

What Wirtz father said

In an interview with German publication Der Spiegel, Hans-Joachim, Wirtz father, revealed the key role Arne Slot played in convincing his son to sign for his club. "Arne Slot has impressed Florian on the pitch. He's also a very pleasant person,” Hans-Joachim said.

"Florian's best coaches have always been those who gave him plenty of freedom. And those with the greatest empathy have also reached Florian. He finds the game in England interesting because it thrives on pace and dynamism.

"Arne Slot presented his playing philosophy, the team tactics in possession and pressing, and how Florian can develop his strengths in these areas. This made a decisive impression on Florian. The training conditions in Liverpool were also totally impressive."
