This proposal, if approved, would represent a massive jump from the 48-team format already planned for the 2026 World Cup.
A One-Off centennial celebration?
The idea for the expansion was first raised by Ignacio Alonso, the head of the Uruguayan Football Federation, to celebrate the World Cup's 100th anniversary.
Uruguay hosted the first-ever tournament in 1930. The 2030 event is already unique, with matches scheduled across three continents and six countries: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco as the main hosts, with special "centenary celebration" matches in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
Proponents argue that a 64-team event would honor the sport's history by allowing more nations to participate in this milestone tournament.
The logistical challenge
While the prospect of a more inclusive tournament is appealing, a 64-team World Cup would present a big logistical hurdles.
The number of matches would increase from the 104 planned for the 48-team format to a staggering 128.
This would place immense strain on hosting nations' infrastructure, transportation, and security. It would also extend the tournament's duration, potentially exacerbating concerns about player welfare and fixture congestion in an already packed football calendar.
