Former Barcelona and Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez has been hit with a six-match suspension following an altercation in his side’s 3-0 defeat to Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final on August 31.
The clash ended in chaos after tempers flared between players and officials, with Suarez at the centre of the storm.
The 38-year-old forward first grabbed Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas by the neck before Sergio Busquets, his Miami teammate, struck Vargas on the chin. The tension escalated when Suarez clashed with Seattle’s director of security, Gene Ramirez.
Despite attempts from Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari to restrain him, Suarez spat in Ramirez’s face, an act that drew immediate disciplinary action.
The Leagues Cup disciplinary committee announced that Suarez’s six-game ban will take effect in next year’s edition of the tournament.
However, Major League Soccer has reserved the right to impose further sanctions.
Busquets and defender Tomas Aviles have also been punished with suspensions of two and three matches, respectively, while Seattle coaching staff member Steven Lenhart received a five-match ban.
Suarez Issues apology
Following the backlash, Suarez issued a public apology, admitting his behaviour was unacceptable and pledging to learn from the incident.
This is not the first time Suarez has faced lengthy suspensions. In 2011, he was banned for eight games after being found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra while at Liverpool.
He also served bans for three separate biting incidents during spells with Ajax, Liverpool, and the Uruguay national team.
Despite his illustrious career with clubs like Barcelona and Liverpool, Suarez’s legacy continues to be shadowed by a series of controversial flashpoints.
