Arsenal's Folarin Balogun guns down Monaco to shatter 62-year-old record
Arsenal loanee and Nigeria’s Super Eagles prospect Folarin Balogun was in fine form again as Stade De Reims maintained their unbeaten run in Ligue 1.
Balogun netted the decisive winner in the second half to help Reims see off AS Monaco 1-0 away from home on Sunday.
It was the 16th goal of the season from the Arsenal forward in 26 matches for Reims in the Ligue 1.
He scored the goal in the second half to help Reims extend their impressive run to 17 matches unbeaten in the Ligue 1.
Balogun breaks Ligue 1 record
It was indeed a record-breaking outing against Monaco for Balogun, Reims and their manager Will Still on Sunday.
The Super Eagles prospect and Arsenal academy product produced the goods again for his club to add to his incredible tally.
He netted the only goal of the game to take his tally to a record-breaking 16 this season for Reims in Ligue 1.
Balogun’s goal saw him become the youngest, at the age of 21 years and 252 days old, to score at least 16 goals in his first season in Ligue 1 since Mohammed Salem achieved the feat with Sedan-Torcy in the 1960/61 season.
He has also scored against each of the teams in the top five this season, the only player to do so this season in the Ligue 1.
Reims boss continues excellent run
Meanwhile, Balogun was not the only one who broke a record at Monaco on Sunday.
His manager, Will Still, who costs the club a whopping €25,000 per game in fines due to the fact he has no UEFA Pro Licence under Ligue 1 rules, is just one match away from a European record.
Reims’ win over Monaco saw the club extend their unbeaten run to 17 matches, making Still the second manager to remain unbeaten in his 17 games since Barcelona’s Tito Vilanova’s record, 18 matches set in 2012/2013.
The 30-year-old has completely turned things around at the club, leading them to six consecutive clean sheets, the longest time Reims have gone without conceding a goal in their league history.
Will’s Les Rouges et Blancs have also registered three successive wins for the first time since April 1978 while also staying unbeaten in 10 away matches for the first time since they went 13 in 1959.
