Alvarez is not scoring — Ex-USA international hails crucial Lookman signing for Atletico

Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman completed a high-profile move from Atalanta to Atletico Madrid in a deal worth €40M.

The 28-year-old forward arrives in the Spanish capital following a stellar stint in Italy, marked by individual accolades and European success.

Before departing Bergamo, Lookman shared a heartfelt farewell to the Atalanta faithful, expressing gratitude for his transformative years with the club. His time in Serie A saw him rise to global prominence, securing 14th place in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings and winning the CAF Player of the Year award.

The transfer has generated significant buzz among football analysts. Former US U-23 midfielder Ian Paul Joy believes Lookman’s arrival provides exactly what Diego Simeone’s squad needs to ignite a late-season title push.

Speaking on the CBS Sports Golazo show, Joy noted:“I think a player like him can have a real impact and rejuvenate Atleti. Give them a little bit of a star factor, which I think they've been lacking.

"Julian Alvarez isn't scoring goals right now, but listen, a star player is going in there to make some noise, that's for sure.”

Alvarez is experiencing a goal drought at the moment, failing to score in any of his last 9 appearances.

Lookman will offer Atletico something completely different. A forward who can play anywhere across the front line, score and assist at a high level.

The former Everton man will be expected to hit the ground running, and should carry on the excellent form he showed with the Super Eagles of Nigeria at AFCON 2025.
