The Brazilian had won the belt last year after stopping Adesanya in the fifth round of their first match in the UFC.
It was the third time Pereira would beat Adesanya, having beaten him twice in kickboxing, including one via a knockout.
However, Adesanya shocked the 35-year-old in their rematch, with the 33-year-old Nigerian delivering a devastating knockout blow after Pereira had boxed him into a corner.
Following the match, there were concerns over Pereira’s health and his plans, with many suggesting he should move up to light heavyweight.

The Brazilian has now revealed what the future holds for him and also assured fans that he is healthy.
Although Pereira did not state clearly his plans, the Brazilian’s tweet suggests he will move up in weight class.
Pereira said on his official Twitter account: Im just here to let u know that I’m fine ! I want to thank my family, my team and all the people who are supporting me during my journey.
Now I just have to rest and continue with the plans that are already on motion. Thanks god.
Pereira tweeted this with a video of him and Adesanya showing respect to each other after their fight.
Pereira will now take a break following the match before returning to the octagon later in the year.
The Brazilian can pick up the option of a rematch against Adesanya, although the New Zealand-based Nigerian insists he will not give him a rematch, urging the Brazilian to move up to lightweight.
