A perfect gift for Nigerians - Former Super Eagles star appreciates Nigeria's AFCON 2025 Bronze
Former Nigerian international Friday Ekpo has showered praise on the Super Eagles following their bronze medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the achievement as a “perfect gift” to Nigerians.
Nigeria secured third place after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt in Casablanca on Saturday, ending the match goalless after regulation time.
Nwabali the hero as Eagles edge Egypt
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero of the encounter, producing crucial saves during the shootout to deny Egyptian stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
His heroics paved the way for Ademola Lookman, who calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal the win for the three-time African champions.
What Ekpo said
Speaking in an interview with Completesports.com, Ekpo commended the team’s mental strength, particularly after their painful semi-final defeat to hosts Morocco.
“This is a perfect gift for Nigerians to celebrate with after narrowly losing the semi-final clash against Morocco on penalties. This penalty victory over Egypt shows the players’ determination to win the bronze medal,” Ekpo said.
Ekpo admitted that many Nigerian fans had hoped for a title triumph but insisted the team’s overall performance deserved recognition.
“Yes, this is not what many Nigerians wanted from the Super Eagles at the tournament; however, they fought a good battle and still deserve to be praised for their performance in Morocco,” he added.
