However, the actors on the pitch are directed by the men in the dugout, who draw up the tactical plans on how to approach their various opponents with an eye on AFCON glory when the tournament finally concludes on January 18.

Those are the coaches and at AFCON 2025, a number of tacticians are being paid handsomely to deliver success on the pitch.

Egypt legend Hossam Hassan is the man tasked with delivering a record-extending eighth title in Morocco and he is also being paid well for the high-pressure job.

Hassan is on €30,000 (Ksh4.5 million) per month since his appointment last year to replace Argentine Hector Cuper, who was reportedly earning a colossal $145,000 (Ksh18.7 million) per month, before he was sacked after a poor AFCON 2023 campaign.

Hassan has so far delivered as his team was the first to seal a Round of 16 ticket after two wins from as many games.

Sudan’s Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah qualified for the 2025 AFCON at the expense of his country, after navigating a tough qualifying campaign in which they played all their home matches away due to the ongoing war in the country.

Appiah, who guided Ghana to the 2014 World Cup, earns €38,000 (Ksh5.7 million) monthly as Sudan coach and he is doing well as he secured their first win at AFCON 2025 when they stunned Equatorial Guinea to keep alive their hopes of making the last 16.

5. Eric Chelle - Nigeria

Former Mali coach Eric Chelle is the man in the Nigeria hot seat as he looks to lead them to AFCON glory that they last tasted in 2013.

Chelle is reportedly paid $50,000 (Ksh6.4 million) per month, having been appointed early this year in a bid to restore the Super Eagles’ status.

Nigeria have already booked their place in the Round of 16 after victories against Tanzania and Tunisia, keeping the dream alive.

Morocco’s Walid Regragui is the man on whose shoulders the weight of expectations of an entire nation rest as the Atlas Lions have been crowned favourites to win AFCON 2025 at home.

Regragui is also one of the best paid national team coaches in Africa with a monthly salary of €70,000 (Ksh10.6 million).

The Atlas Lions did not have a great AFCON 2023 but there is plenty of pressure in 2025 and it is already telling after they struggled to break down Mali in their second match to draw 1-1, having secured a 2-0 win over Comoros in the tournament opener.

3. Emerse Faye - Ivory Coast

The defending AFCON champions are led by ex-international Emerse Faye who was handed the job and a big salary after masterminding their surprise run to the title on home soil early last year.

Faye is also earning €75,000 (Ksh10.6 million) per month as The Elephants look to defend their title and have started with a win and an entertaining draw against Cameroon which leave them in a good position to make the Round of 16.

2. Hugo Broos - South Africa

Broos, who led Bafana Bafana to third place at AFCON 2023, is confident they can do better this year and for the massive job he has done, and continues to do, he is being paid €75,000 (Ksh10.6 million) monthly on a contract that runs up to the 2026 World Cup.
