On Friday, March 22, the Utah Royals faced the North Carolina Courage at America First Field in Sandy, Utah, and prevailed 2-1.

Compared to the Royals' season-opening defeat to the Chicago Red Stars one week prior, this game showed improvement.

But in the thirty-minute mark of play, Ally Sentnor, the first overall pick, scored with a kick that sailed over her foot and into the back of the net.

Sentnor's strike gave Utah the lead again at 2-1 and marked her first goal in the NWSL.

For the remainder of the half, the Royals held off the Courage, taking the advantage into the locker room.

Within the first fifteen minutes of the second half following the intermission, North Carolina had numerous scoring opportunities.

Agnes Nyberg of Utah was assessed a foul inside the box in the 58th minute, which resulted in the first penalty kick of the match for the Courage.

In the 58th minute, Malia Berkely's penalty kick was stopped by Royals goalkeeper Mandy Haught, who dove to her right.
