“I have never been so unhappy in my life" - Victoria Beckham has opened up on her husband's transfer to Real Madrid in a new Netflix documentary.

David Beckham has reflected on his marriage to Victoria Beckham in his new Netflix documentary series titled ‘BECKHAM’.

David and Victoria Beckham are currently known to be one of the most influential football couples of all time.

The former Manchester United and England captain recently opened up on his life behind the scenes as well as his experiences since tying the knot with former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.

The famous couple got engaged a year after they met at a football match in 1997 and officially tied the knot on July 4, 1999 in a lavish ceremony. 

However, the 48-year-old Englishman has now opened up on his marriage which is already 24 years old.

In the Netflix documentary, the former Red Devils no.7 revealed details of his personal life and his career in the world of football.

Beckham, who spent more than a decade playing for Manchester United, excelled under the helm of Sir. Alex Ferguson.

However, Sir. Alex wanted to go further and decide who he should marry . Apparently, the coach preferred his superstar midfielder marry a “local girl ,” although, Beckham's choice left him disappointed.

According to Ferguson, fame revolutionized Beckham, especially after his relationship with the former Spice Girls became public.

“His performance went down,” Sir Alex coach points out in the four-part documentary. 

“Well, he changed, there's no doubt about that. The media attention he was receiving and becoming a celebrity was different than what I wanted. Getting David to stay grounded became more difficult.

 “David was the only player I coached who chose to be famous, who made it his mission to be known outside of the game,” he added.

However, the Inter Miami CEO argued that fame did not change him but emphasized that he was always thinking about his future outside football.

“It definitely didn't change me. I didn't want anything to get in the way of football, but I knew my career was going to end at some point. And I wanted to have a career after football and that ate away at the coach, he simply wanted him to be the best footballer possible and for me to marry a local girl who was not a superstar,” David responded.

Beckham's famous disagreements with Ferguson opened the door to his departure to Real Madrid in 2003, a decision that his wife Victoria, did not like.

 “I told him: 'We have nowhere to live, no school...'” Victoria opened says in the series.

 “He arrived in the city as if he were the president of the United States,”the former singer turned fashion designer added.

 Beckham’s arrival as a Galacticos in 2003, saw Victoria heavily criticized by the media, and that was highlighted when she starred on the cover of Vogue with her famous phrase: “Spain smells like garlic.” was the villain. 

"They said that she hated Spain and that she smelled like garlic. I never said that. They knew I couldn't move because of the children's school. Everything I did was made up or taken out of context. But the problem was never Spain,” Victoria said about that time, in which rumours about her husband’s alleged infidelity emerged.

“It was the worst time of the marriage. The world was attacking us and we were against each other. 

“Until Madrid, we were together; Then, we didn't feel each other's support. I can't describe how it affected us. I have never been so unhappy in my life,” she added.

David Beckham’s Netflix documentary series

The Netflix documentary series titled Beckham includes footage of the hatred of the former footballer who is now one of the richest in the world — condemnation in British tabloids and constant fan abuse, including one who hung his effigy from a noose outside a London pub.

The four-part documentary series was made available to stream on Netflix from October 4.
