The Red Devils experienced a historic black Sunday as Mohammed Salah-inspired Liverpool handed them their heaviest defeat in the Premier League in decades.

However, the 28-year-old Portuguese, who was the stand-in captain for Manchester United, has been at the top of trends following the in-famous defeat against their bitter rivals.

Mo Salah was in an imperious form as Liverpool destroyed Fernandes and Man United.

Here are the three reasons why Fernandes is at the top of the trends table at the moment.

Fernandes asked to be substituted

Given the manner with which Manchester United shipped in goals at Anfield, Bruno Fernandes was a frustrated figure on the Anfield pitch.

The stand-in captain was spotted with his arms raised asking to be subbed off and saved from the embarrassment.

As per club legend, Gary Neville, it was disgraceful behaviour to see the United captain downing tools in the middle of the game.

“Honestly, I have to say some of his behaviour in the second half has been a disgrace,” Neville said per Talk Sport.

“ I have had enough of him throwing his arms about, not running about. That wasn't a captain’s performance by him.”

The incident with the assistant referee

Another reason Fernandes is trending on the internet is an incident between him and the assistant referee at Anfield.

At some point in the second half against Liverpool, the already frustrated captain appeared to have pushed the official in the back around the Liverpool touchline.

Fernandes was accused of pushing the referee in the defeat to Liverpool.

It was an incident that was spotted by the centre referee on the day, Andy Madley, who didn't include it in his match report, however.

Despite the outcry that has trailed the incident, former Premier League referee, Dermot Gallagher, had a different view about the incident.

“I actually have mixed feelings about it,” Gallagher said per Sky Sports. “You don’t want a player to be manhandling an official, but I think the linesman handles Fernandes more than the other way round,” he added.

Teammates angry with Fernandes

As per Daily Mail, Fernandes has been heavily criticised by his teammates following the historic loss at Liverpool.

Fernandes’ behaviour, one of which has been mentioned above, throughout the defeat at Anfield, didn't go down well with his teammates.

Fernandes may have missed the chance to be Manchester United's permanent skipper.

But given his attitude during the defeat, there are concerns that Fernandes, who has worn the armband as stand-in skipper for Harry Maguire, may not be fit enough after all for the role permanently.

His teammates didn't like how he walked to the tunnel full-time without acknowledging the away fans amongst other negative attitudes.

There is an indication that Fernandes will not be facing any punishment from the FA following the incident with the assistant referee.

According to a Sky Sports report, the Portuguese midfielder will walk free as the FA has decided not to press any charges.

There were calls for Fernandes to be banned for up to five matches for the incident, but according to Gallagher, the official nudged Fernandes first and that settled it.

“I think once the official does it first, Fernandes is almost fly-swatting - ‘get out of my way I want to get on with it,” he added.
