West Ham will try again to sign Manchester United's former captain Harry Maguire after failing with an earlier attempt this summer

Reigning UEFA Europa Conference League champions West Ham United have returned for the signature of former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire after initially failing to capture the Englishman with an earlier approach.

West Ham back in for West Ham

West Ham are keen on Maguire joining them but have been rebuffed by the England international this summer, but are set to test his resolve with a new bid.

The Hammers had agreed to a deal with Manchester United for £30 million to sign Maguire but failed to find personal terms with the centre-back. According to the Daily Mail, West Ham will re-open talks for Maguire, with Manchester United keen on a move for Nice defender Jean Claire Todibo as a replacement for injured centre-back Lisandro Martinez, instead of relying on their former captain.

Maguire facing battle for first-team opportunities

Maguire was deposed as captain of the side after one season with Erik Ten Hag in charge and was replaced by midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who was already acting in that capacity when the Englishman was out of the side.

He already revealed that he was unwilling to leave the club after losing his place as captain, with some quarters saying he was keen to maintain his current salary, while others claim he was eager to fight for his place at Manchester United.

He could be tempted to leave the Red Devils if his place in the side is untenable under Ten Hag however, with the 2024 Euros coming up at the end of the season and England manager Gareth Southgate already stating the importance of consistent playing time in selecting his squads for tournaments.
