Weghorst cites Ten Hag's strategy for lack of goals at Manchester United

Wout Weghorst, the towering Dutch striker, recently opened up about his challenging tenure at Manchester United.

Despite the team's overall success, including securing a top-four finish and clinching the Carabao Cup, Weghorst's contribution in terms of goals was minimal.

The 31-year-old, who was on loan from Burnley, attributed this to the 'different' role assigned to him by manager Erik ten Hag.

"The way we played was also different from what I was used to,” Weghorst explained, as reported by Daily Mail, noting the contrast with his previous experiences in Germany and Turkey.

Adapting to the Premier League

Weghorst acknowledged the Premier League's competitive nature, citing it as "by far the toughest league in the world, with the best defenders."

His role at United, primarily as a facilitator for others to excel, was a departure from his usual position as the main goalscorer. "I was the end of the line, while at United I mainly had to ensure that others could excel," he stated.

Despite his integral role in the team's dynamics, Weghorst felt the pinch of not scoring as frequently as he would have liked.

Revival in the Bundesliga

Now on loan at Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, Weghorst has found his scoring touch again, netting four goals in 12 appearances.

This return to form follows his prolific spell with Besiktas before his move to United. His experience highlights the adaptability and resilience of professional footballers when transitioning between leagues and playing styles.
