Super Falcons will begin the hunt to win their 10th WAFCON on June 6.

As the Super Falcons intensify preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, head coach Justin Madugu has stated that he is not feeling pressured to deliver Nigeria’s historic 10th continental title.

The Nigerian women’s national team, nine-time champions of Africa, arrived in Casablanca on Wednesday ahead of the tournament which runs from July 5 to 26.

Nigeria is placed in Group B, alongside Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana, and will begin their campaign on Sunday, July 6 against Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium.

Super Falcons are Africa's WAFCON queens.

What Madugu said

Despite Nigeria’s decorated history in the competition having won 9 of the 12 tournaments since 1998, Madugu says the team is calm and focused.

“I am not under pressure. There will be stories and distractions, but we are staying focused on what lies ahead. We know our target. We are going for the trophy. That’s what doing well means for us. It is mission ‘X’ for every one of us,” the coach told The PUNCH.

Coach Justine Madugu says travel issues stopped Oshoala from Super Falcons duty.

Madugu also highlighted the importance of the opportunity for Indigenous coaches like himself to lead the team at such a high-profile event.

The 24-woman squad is now fully assembled in Casablanca, with Asisat Oshoala of Bay FC and China-based Folasade Ijamilusi having arrived earlier.

The team is expected to intensify their training sessions ahead of a final warm-up match against Ghana’s Black Queens on Sunday.

Earlier in the week, the Super Falcons impressed with a disciplined performance in Lisbon, holding European powerhouse Portugal to a goalless draw a confidence-boosting result ahead of the tournament.

With preparations entering their final phase and belief running high, Nigeria will be aiming to reclaim the WAFCON crown they last won in 2018.
