Victor Wanyama is set to have a new coach at CF Montreal following the sacking of Argentine tactician Hernan Losada whom he had fallen out with after turning him into a bench warmer

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama could be a relieved man following the sacking of CF Montreal Hernan Losada on Thursday.

Wanyama had fallen out with Losada somewhat after the coach left him on the bench and sometimes out of the squad for much of the second leg of the season as the club later missed out on the MLS playoff in what was the final straw in his back.

The midfielder started just one game since mid-July and his bit-part role led to a furious bust-up with Losada when he sought answers over his limited playing time.

“I was disappointed. As a player, you want to play more. I didn’t really understand why,” Wanyama said last month.

“But I trusted my teammates to get the job done, even if the situation disappointed me. At first, the team was winning and I respected the decision. When things started to get worse, I asked for explanations and I didn’t get one. I was surprised that he couldn’t give me the reason. I think the communication was not clear with the coach… Our opinions didn’t matter.”

Addressing Wanyama’s comments head-on when he gave his own media address, Losada denied that he had not had conversations with the midfielder.

“Everything I had to say to him, I told him looking him straight in the eyes,” the head coach said. “I can understand his frustration. Sometimes, it can be difficult to accept that a young player plays in your place because he is better than you.”

The younger player Losada was talking about is 19-year-old academy graduate Nathan Saliba who was the preferred starter in midfield for Montreal as Wanyama dropped to the bench.

The writing was on the wall for Losada whose first season in charge of Montreal ended in disappointment as they failed to win a trophy and also missed out on the Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs.

Montreal CEO Gabriel Gervais last week expressed his displeasure at the trophyless season and also the style of football the club played under the Argentine coach while leaving it up to Sporting Director Olivier Renard to decide Losada’s future.

“Even if we had entered [the playoffs] through the back door, we would not have been satisfied with the overall way we played,” Gervais told La Presse’s Jean-Francois Teotonio.

“If we look at the whole season, we are not satisfied with the final result. Not just for not having reached the playoffs, but for not having won a trophy.”

As it turned out, Losada received his marching orders from the club he joined at the start of the season as the successor to the popular and successful Wilfried Nancy.

With Losada gone, Wanyama’s next battle is to win over his new coach and regain his place in the team after a challenging 2023 campaign.
