Taiwo Awoniyi is close to a return from injury according to Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper.

Nottingham Forest coach Steve Cooper has revealed that Super Eagles star Taiwo Awoniyi is close to making his long-awaited return from injury.

The Nigerian striker has been sidelined since January 4 2023 when he picked up a knock in Forest's 1-0 Premier League victory against Southampton.

According to Cooper, the Super Eagles attacker is recovering at a good pace and will be making a return to competitive action sooner rather than later.

“Cheikhou (Kouyate) is not far away. Taiwo (Awoniyi) is not far away. Moussa is not far away," the Welsh manager said.

The manager added on the importance of the players, "they are three really big players for us. We’ll just focus on the next game, see who’s available and commit to the plan.”

Cooper had previously spoken about Awoniyi’s recovery journey according to Nottinghamshirelive, “Taiwo is making good progress. He is out on the grass, and he’s running.

“He’s not with the team yet and not kicking any balls, but he has made progress in not just straight-line running. It’s a positive step for him, but he’s still weeks away from being close,” the 43-year-old said.

Awoniyi was signed by Nottingham Forest last summer for what was a club-record £17 million fee at the time.

The Nigerian was Nottingham Forest’s leading scorer with five goals in 19 games across all competitions before he got injured.

His tally has since been surpassed by Brennan Johnson but Awoniyi’s importance to the team cannot be overstated and his return would be crucial to their plans to avoid relegation.
