The Tanzanian side are hoping to benefit from the understanding between Abuya and Rupia having signed both players from Kenya Police

Singida Fountain Gate FC hope to reap big from the understanding between Duke Abuya and Elvis Rupia after signing both Kenyan players in the just-concluded transfer window.

The two were lured to Tanzania from Kenya Police and their new club expects to benefit from a good partnership between them on the pitch, having done so in the Foot all Kenya Federation Premier League.

Abuya is a midfielder who can play either behind the striker or a deep-lying playmaker and can sometimes be deployed on the wing while Rupia is an out-and-out striker whose physical presence is a nightmare for defenders.

Singida therefore feel having played together in Kenya, the two players can link up again to good effect and fire them to glory this season.

“We signed them because of their quality, we expect a lot from Duke Abuya. The position they both play in will bring chemistry because they played together and we have no doubt we will benefit from that link,” said Singida spokesman Hussein Masanza.

Rupia left Kenya Police this month on the back of a brilliant campaign when he won the 2022-23 Golden Boot award after bagging 27 goals having broken the record of 26 set in 1976 by Gor Mahia legend Maurice ‘Sonyi’ Ochieng.

Masanza also explained how the need to bring in players with experience in continental football led to their decision to sign Harambee Stars defender Joash Onyango.

Onyango left Simba SC after three years with the Dar es Salaam giants for a one-year loan deal at Singida, which includes the option to buy, and with the club set for a campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup, they felt the former Gor Mahia defender had all the qualities they were looking for.

“They are good players and we have high expectations. For Joash Onyango, we signed him because we are going to be in the CAF Confederation Cup and he is an experienced player who has been there,” he added.

“We know he is going to help the younger players who have not played in the competition and we have no doubt that we have a quality player.”

While Abuya and Onyango have already featured for their new club this season, Rupia will be hoping to make his debut after the international break.

The three players are currently in camp with national team Harambee Stars who beat Qatar 2-1 in a friendly match on Thursday and will take on South Sudan next Tuesday.
