Fans could be punished for chanting Messi at Ronaldo in Saudi League stadiums after league executive's statement.

A Saudi Professional League executive, Hafiz Al-Mudejl, has been quoted as saying fans who troll Cristiano Ronaldo using Lionel Messi's name should be prosecuted.

What happened

Ronaldo led the current wave of European football superstars moving to Saudi Arabia and is effectively the face of the league.

The SPFL tried to get Messi to join his rival in the league, with Al-Hilal offering him a mouthwatering contract offer; however, the Argentina international opted for a move to Inter Miami in the MLS.

Although Ronaldo showed his goal-scoring prowess last season, finding the back of the net 14 times in only 16 matches, Al-Nassr failed to win the league title and were dumped out of the cup.

This, and a few bad performances, have frustrated members of the Faris Najd fanbase, and in some instances, they chose to vent by chanting Messi's name to irk the Portuguese superstar.

This repeated itself a few days ago when Al-Nassr lost their second consecutive league game to Al-Tawoun.

The fans began to chant "We want Messi" in the stadium, as previously reported by Pulse Sports.

What Hafiz Al-Mudlej said

Hafiz, who is a Saudi Professional League executive, was seemingly unhappy with the situation and suggested that fans who are caught doing such should face disciplinary measures.

"The fans who continuously boo and shout 'Messi, Messi' to Ronaldo, who is such an ambassador of our league, should face disciplinary action,” he said, per Sports Keeda.

It remains to be seen if the Saudi government follows through with this or how they can possibly police fan chants in stadiums.
