Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico finds himself in a serious condition and in intensive care following a horse riding accident, the club confirmed on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Spaniard was involved in a collision with a runaway horse while riding in the El Rocio region of Huelva, Spain, resulting in a fall and subsequent head injury, according to local media reports.

Rico was swiftly transported by helicopter to a hospital in Seville for immediate medical attention.

The incident occurred after Rico had returned to his native Spain, having been granted time off following PSG's record-breaking 11th league title win, secured with a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg.

Although he was on the bench during the title-clinching match, his unfortunate accident has now placed him in a serious condition, raising concerns among the football community.

A spokesperson for PSG provided an update on Rico's condition, stating, "He is in a serious condition."

The club expressed their support for the goalkeeper and assured that they are maintaining constant contact with his family during this difficult time.

Rico, who joined Paris St-Germain in 2020, has made 29 appearances for the French champions since his move from Sevilla in September 2019.

Before his stint at PSG, he spent the 2018-2019 season on loan at Premier League club Fulham.

Rico's former club, Sevilla, also extended their well-wishes, tweeting, "Lots of strength and a speedy recovery."
